Small steps I have taken from my own experience will help you begin your journey of Positive Seizure Management today. This is a journey that begins with one step and will have you feeling better in your own time, at your own pace. These steps, when practiced consistently, will bring pleasant results and a higher sense of well-being.
Before we begin, Let’s be clear about Positive Seizure Management:
Positive Seizure Management is an innovative self-management program for adults diagnosed with a seizure disorder of all types. Positive Seizure Management is not intended to be a cure or medical therapy. I, Tenacious Tonya, am not a doctor or therapist and do not assume any liability for any outcome, positive or negative, experienced by individuals following the program. Positive Seizure Management is a self-management program intended to bring a better sense of well-being and wholeness to the diagnosed adult. I ask everyone considering Positive Seizure Management to talk with their diagnosing doctor before making any changes to the medical or daily routine (including diet and exercise).
Now that we have clarity, let’s begin our journey. Remember, small steps will bring solid success. This is not a race. If, at any time you find yourself overwhelmed, please send me a message and I will help your mind become clear once again. Ready to journey ahead?
SURRENDER & ACCEPTANCE
As adults when we receive a diagnosis of Epilepsy/Refractory Epilepsy, we instinctively begin to reach in ourselves and our world for control of this diagnosis. Even more when our doctor explains there is no medical control and no cure. I have found in one of the Steps to Positive Seizure Management, it is in the letting go of this need for control that we surrender our human power to a Source of Power Higher than ourselves. Soon following this feeling of surrender is Acceptance. We Accept, as humans, there is only so much we can do. We must develop a closer relationship with our higher power to live a life of better well-being, a life of Positive Seizure Management.
“Understanding is the first step to acceptance, and only with acceptance can there be recovery.”
J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
How did I learn to surrender?
When I began practicing Positive Seizure Management, knowing surrender and acceptance are key, I practiced paying attention to my mind and body. After a seizure would occur, I would practice small moments of self -love, and gratitude. This did not come immediately, but I was able to practice this to the point of feeling better within a few minutes after starting the self-love and gratitude practice. I soon noticed recovery periods after seizures were becoming less and less in measure of time and I was feeling more refreshed afterward. This is my first testimony of Positive Seizure Management working in my life. Instead of fighting the pain, sleepiness, and other postictal effects, I surrendered. Instead of hating the seizure, becoming angry with my diagnosis, or feeling like a burden to others, I surrendered. In the surrender, I began to find peace and a path to a future that would feel better. You can too!
Important to note, surrendering is not giving up.
Surrendering is letting go.
I believe God will allow us, as humans, to have what we choose through the Power of Choice until we surrender all to Him. When I surrendered my struggle with Peri-Ventricular Nodular Heterotopia (PVNH) and Epilepsy to Him, I discovered blessings, peace of mind, and rest. God gifted me with a deeper relationship with Him, a real love for myself, and a true, ego-free, vision for my future writing about my experiences for your benefit.
Always keep learning more effective & innovative ways to manage seizures
until a cure is discovered for every affected individual.
I encourage you to take a moment and write thoughts about what you have read today in your journal. Also, as you go about your day become aware of thoughts that may come to you regarding what you have read and write them down for further study. Growing is a process and will occur throughout your day. Positive Seizure Management is a journey of self-growth as well as seizure management. I look forward to sharing the next step in our journey with you.
